The Brookings-Harbor High School boys basketball team staked out an early 7-6 first-period lead Friday at Sutherlin High School in a Far West 3A-5 league game.

That was after coach Jess Beaman’s Bruins had easily disposed of the Douglas Trojans, 80-53, earlier in the week.

So far, so good.

But the other three quarters against Sutherlin’s Bulldogs wouldn’t go as well.

Brookings sophomore Jake Beaman had hit a long three-ball to start things off for the visiting Bruins, with teammate Jason Vanginderen chipping in the balance of Brookings’ early lead.

Then, going into the second quarter, 6-foot-4-inch Bruin guard Derek Tuttle advanced the score to 9-6 until Sutherlin’s Collin Bodien promptly nailed a three-pointer to make it 9-9.

That would be the last time Brookings-Harbor was that close to the Bulldogs.

But even as Sutherlin pulled away, the Bruins fought on, sinking three more baskets to trail by just 19-15 at halftime.

In the third period, Sutherlin went to work. And Brookings just couldn’t get the ball to fall.

The Bulldogs proceeded to outscore the Bruins by a 13-4 margin, fueled in large part by two three-pointers courtesy of Sutherlin’s Bodien and senior Mason Gill.

The two teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter but that wasn’t enough for the Bruins, as Sutherlin finished with a 44-28 win.

That improved the Bulldogs’ league record to 2-1, 12-1 overall.

The loss dropped Brookings to 1-2 in league play, 7-10 overall.

Bodien led all scorers with 17, while Evan Fronckowiak led the Bruins with nine and Tuttle had eight.

According to the Oregon School Activities Association website, the Bruins had been scheduled to face North Valley High School in Grants Pass on Tuesday. That game has been cancelled.

So, Brookings will play Friday, Jan. 24, at St. Mary’s of Medford. The Crusaders are 1-1 in league. Game time will be 5:30 p.m.

The Brookings boys junior varsity, meanwhile, lost 52-30. The Lady Bruins JV lost as well, 41-39.
