Some days are diamonds. Some days are stones.

After making the long 7 hour trip Monday to take on Oregon Episcopal in Portland on Tuesday, the Brookings-Harbor Bruins fell just short in their bid to enter the 3A/2A/1A State Championship when OEHS found two nets while holding Brookings scoreless to send the Blue and Gold packing.

It wasn't the end the team was looking for but BHHS Head Boys Soccer Coach, Jess Beaman gave his teams opponent the proper respect they were due in the loss.

"They (Oregon Episcopal) were very impressive. This was a team you could tell that plays all year around and has played with one another for years," Beaman said.

Beaman said he was proud of his team for not throwing in the towel when OE snuck a shot in with inches to spare on their first score. Later, a deceptive cross kick managed to land just inside the net to give the host team the win and the chance to advance in the championship round against Catlin Gabel, who beat Taft on Tuesday.

Brookings had some good looks but the ball, according to Beaman, seemingly had a mind of it's own.

"It was one of those really frustrating days when the ball was within inches of the net several times and wouldn't break our way. It happens... that's soccer, it just wasn't our day."

But Beaman said overall his team was impressive.

"My team played well the whole time," he said. "We are a young team and for next season we have to step up our training a bit more now that we know what the caliber is when we get up to Portland to play."

Beaman said that additional training will include stepping up conditioning, better movements, making quicker touches and throwing the ball quicker.

"We have to be ready," he said.
