It was a good ride. The 2019 Bruin Football Team came to the end of one of their more prolific seasons in recent memory when 4th state ranked Amity Warriors outdistanced the Curry County contingent 44-18 in the first round of the O.S.A.A. 3A State Playoffs Saturday afternoon in McMinneville.

The game was closer than the score revealed.

Coach Shaun Bavaro's grid iron heroes didn't let up or let down, pressing the Warriors at every turn narrowing the gap on their nemesis from last year with a 24 point spread at games end compared to 46 points from the year prior. Bavaro was heavy hearted at the games conclusion indicating that he thought the game was 'winnable.'

"We(Brookings) really shot ourselves in the foot several times and it cost us the ability to climb back into the game."

Amity came out hard in the first quarter scoring three TD's taking full advantage of two costly Brookings miscues converting them into scores. After getting on the scoreboard first after a 9 yard run into the end zone to make it the Warriors 6-0, BHHS coughed up the ensuing onside kick to their opponents who recovered the ball at the Bruins 49 stripe. On the very next play AHS junior quarterback, Keenan Graham, aired it out 40 yards to running back, Cody Dyche, who ambled in to make it 12-0.

The Bruins sputtered again on the first offensive down when QB Hooper pulled back from center and the ball came loose. Amity hopped on it and motored to the BHHS 32 yard marker before Dyche would dive into pay dirt with 2:41 left to go in the first frame.

With the heat on and down 18-0, the Bruins got to work after Jacub McCollum took the kickoff to Amity's 49. Logan Holler executed a drive passing and running the ball himself to the 30 where he hit Oggie Badger on a daring 4th and 20 to put Brookings on the board, now trailing 18-6.

The Warriors weren't done though with Dyches returning to the land of touch downs for his 3rd of the afternoon making it 24-6 with 8:48 left in the half. To add insult to injury, Amity's wide out, Wyatt Hatch, would catch an over the shoulder boulder streaking 27 yards down the sidelines to make it Amity 30- Brookings 6. The Bruins would return fire when a kickoff line drive hit a lineman for BHHS in the chest and he went 50 yards to make it a 30-12 games as both teams struggled to make conversions and PAT's.

Badger would intercept Amity and the Bruins were driving on the Warriors half of the field as the first half came to a close. With :10 seconds left the Bruins threw into the end zone but Holler was hit on the release and the ball was intercepted for a touch back.

In the third quarter the Bruins would shoot themselves in the paw yet again throwing another interception to set up another Amity score 36-12. Lightning would burn the bears again as Holler would be intercepted again in the end zone after BHHS drove all the way from the 49 to their own 27.

AHS back, Russel Brown, would bust loose a 44 yard gallop with 1:27 left in the 3rd to put Amity up 44-12. The Bruins would populate the score board last when Hollar would run in from 5 yards out for the final tally 44-18.

Amity advances to play Rainier next week in the quarterfinal round with Brookings bunk mates Cascade Christian and Hidden Valley going at it in their next round.
