The Brookings-Harbor Bruins football team continued their winning ways by handing their hosts, the Lakeview Honkers, a 38-15 beat down to remain undefeated (4-0) going into regular season play next Friday at South Umpqua.

In a troublesome backdrop behind the scenes in comments to the Pilot, BHHS Head Football Coach, Shaun Bavaro, confirmed that the game took place on Saturday rather than the usual Friday after a potential shooter hoax sidelined the Honkers practice sessions for 72 hours prior to the contest after an individual allegedly circulated a 'hit list' around the school.

"They(Lakeview) did a fantastic job of ensuring both our teams safety by waiting to get extra security and some electronic experts in place to reveal the identity of the person responsible for the threat." adding "No one was going to play until we knew it was safe to do so."

In a chilly game with temperatures hovering around 45 degrees and intermittent snow flurries coating the field, the Bruins at times played as much against themselves as against the Honker's, by racking up several needless personal foul penalties, along with two costly interceptions and a lost fumble. True to form though, as in recent contests, BHHS shook off the distractions of their own making to ultimately get the win by dynamiting the exits in the fourth quarter blowing up on the Honker's with three touchdowns in a space of five minutes to put the game on ice.

Brookings scored the first quarters only entry going up 3-0 on a Logan Holler  37 yard field goal.

Second quarter action featured Holler back at it, this time hooking up with Jason Deshon on a gutsy 4th and 12 down at Lakeview's 26 yard line. Holler took a shot by the Honker's defense and drilled the ball for the go ahead score. After making the PAT Bruins are up 10-0 midway through the quarter.

Lakeview would then throw an interception to BHHS defender Andrew Burger setting the table for another Bruin TD when Holler found 6'4" Derek Tuttle in the back of the coffin to make it 17-0 at halftime.

After removing some snowflakes from their shoulder pads and helmets, the Blue and Gold snagged another Lakeview interception but would fall prey to their own personal zombie penalty zone in the 3rd quarter ending any chances of scoring in that stanza. The Honkers got on the scoreboard scooping up a Bruin fumbled snap from center to amble in from 14 yards out with 8:16 left in the period. The Bruins would throw their second interception when Ethan Hooper was picked off on the Lakeview 48 stripe. The score 17-7 at the end of three.

Early on fourth quarter play had Hooper hitting Tuttle on a 23 yard slant pass touchdown across the middle to power up the Bruins scoring machine 24-7.

But the Bruins air force wasn't done.

Twice more Brookings would get touchdowns in the air. The Hooper/Tuttle connecting flight yielded a 10 yard strike, Bruins 31-Honkers 7. Hooper was on a roll and found a new end zone dance partner in Deshon who was back for his second score of the afternoon with 6:38 left in the contest grabbing a back of the box pull down to put BHHS up 38-7.

Lakeview earned 'a little too late' feel good TD with 19 seconds left to close the game 38-15 after banging in a conversion to their run in.

At 4-0 the Bruins sport their best record since 1994 while Lakeview falls to 0-4.

Bavaro was happy with the win but says there is room for improvement.

"We find ways to win and when my kids are hitting on all cylinders we are hard to beat." And about the penalties? "We will continue to work on that, we can't afford those easily avoidable circumstances in future games."

Next week: Brookings at South Umpqua to start regular season play. Preview of that game on the newsstands Wednesday.
