After securing second place in their league and keeping hold of their playoff seat after being challenged by St. Mary’s, the Bruins proceeded to the first round of the OSAA 3A state playoffs on Friday where they traveled to Portland to face the De La Salle North Catholic Knights in the first round of playoffs.

The Knights managed to overwhelm the Bruins in the first quarter, with the frustrated Bruins trailing behind for the rest of the game and ending at a wide 76-31 in the Knight’s favor.

The Knights scored first, racking up eight points before the Bruins put any of their own on the board. The Bruins struggled to find their footing and the Knights pressed the attack, scoring up to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Bruins come out aggressive and soon start to bridge the gap as they scored up to 15 points, but the game soon swung back to the Knight favor as they kept a steady pace with seven points of their to maintain a comfortable lead at 29-15 going into the second half. The Bruins grew frustrated and repeatedly found themselves running into foul trouble as the game went on.

The Knights returned aggressively in the second half as they starting racking up points again while keeping the Bruins in check. The third quarter ended with the Knights well ahead at 54-17. The Bruins stayed aggressive in the final quarter and nearly doubled their points, but the Knights lead only grew as the game finally grew to a close at 76-31.

This loss officially knocked the Bruins out of the playoffs, ending their first year at the 3A level. The Knights will go on to play the Sutherlin Bulldogs, the first place team in the Bruins conference, in the quarterfinal match on Thursday.

The team went 15-9 overall this year and ended at rank No. 17 in the OSAA 3A rankings. In their league, they managed to take second place behind the undefeated Sutherland Bulldogs after some stiff competition for second place from St. Mary’s and Cascade Christian.
