Brookings sending six wrestlers to state

The Brookings-Harbor wrestlers finished the district qualifier this week and placed sixth as a team with 110 points, 4 points behind South Umpqua who had 114.

The team will send six wrestlers to the state tournament in Portland next week.

Qualifiers for states include 145, Kelvonte Dawsey; 152, William Miller; 170, Jacob Wellenbrock; 182, Jon Zabadua; 220, Louie Blandau –– all placed third in their weight classes.

Averi Winn won the district at the heavyweight level.

“This is a good end to the season. It has been rough with a lot of tough days where we suffered some losses and it didn’t look good,” coach Alonso Nalls said, “but the kids came through today, and we will be taking the most kids to state at one time in the four years that I have been coaching.”

He said he was proud of all the wrestlers and how hard they worked without quitting or giving up on themselves.

“I really push these guys and set high expectations for them,” he said.
