The Bruins wrestling team hosted Hidden Valley on Wednesday as they celebrated their senior night before heading off to the state qualifiers in the coming week. The Bruins were victorious, beating the Mustangs 31-21.
“We did good and it went well,” said Bruins coach Alonzo Nalls. “I appreciate them coming over so we could have our senior night.”
Johny Zebadua, Averi Winn and Alex Contreras are the Bruin’s three graduating seniors.
“It’s been a great season, but its not over yet,” Winn said.
Zabadua faced off against Frank Vasquez. Their match went into the second round, where Zabadua pinned Vasquez at the 58-second mark. Winn wrestled Makai Shields, with Winn taking the match in the second round with a pin at 1:17. Contreras wrestled Jacob Hushes but lost in the second round.
Loius Blandua of the Bruins wrestled Makai Shields and won in the second round at the 1:29 mark with a pin. Jacob Wellenbrock of the Bruins took on Franky Vasquez and pinned Vasquez in the first round at the 37-second mark.
“We gotta continue to improve and we’ll have an opportunity to do that this weekend,” Nalls said.
Contreras went to compete at the girl’s regional state qualifier, where she advanced to the semi-final match of the 140-pound weight class on Friday. The rest of the team competes at the district dual meet today at Cascade Christian. The following week they’ll compete in the district tournament for the opportunity to compete at state.
“Its always a coin toss, but the best we can do is make sure we wrestle well,” Nalls said.
