The Bruins wrestlers headed to Del Norte High School on Saturday for the 36th annual Battle at the Border meet. They placed ninth overall with a score of 70 points in their second meet of the year.
“Overall, it was a good showing for the Bruins. We wrestled well and saw some improvement over last year,” said Bruins coach Alonzo Nalls.
The top wrestler for the Bruins boys was Jon Zebadua, who took third place in the 195 pounds bracket, falling just short of second after losing by one point against the first-seed wrestler, Ayden Lindsey of Illinois Valley.
Next best for the Bruins was Averi Winn, who took fourth in the 285 bracket after ending in the semi-final match against Maximus Rice. Louie Blondell and Jacob Wellenbrock of the Bruins both ended just shy of placing in their own brackets.
For the girls, Alex Contreras ended up taking second place in the girls tournament bracket.
The Bruins next meet will be the Coast Classic in North Bend this Friday starting at 1 p.m. and going through Saturday. After that they’ll head to Grants Pass the following weekend to compete in the Grants Past Winter Blast tournament on Friday and Saturday.
