Escorted by a fire truck, lights and sirens blaring, the playoff-bound Bruins received quite the send off Tuesday as they toured the school district and proceeded down Oak onto Chetco Road before heading up to Gladstone in Northern Oregon for the first round of the OSAA 4A Championship Playoffs.
Last week the Bruins took a 5-3 victory in their home Play In game against the the Sweet Home Huskies, which secured their spot in the first round of the 4A Playoffs starting later today. For the first round, the Bruins will face the Gladstone Gladiators today at 5 p.m. to decide if they will advance to the quarterfinals on May 25.
The Bruins took second in the Far West league with a league record of 10-5 and an overall record of 19-8, while the Gladiators finished first in the 2 Tri-Valley Conference with a 14-1 league record and 18-8 overall.
The Gladiators are currently ranked No. 4 in the OSAA 4A rankings compared to rank No. 20 Bruins.
Despite their difference in rank, the teams seem closely matched with the Bruins actually taking more runs scored and less runs allowed this year at 230 runs to the Gladiator’s 193 and having only given up 100 runs to Gladstone’s 116.
If the Bruins prevail over the Gladiators, they’ll go on to face either North Bend, the first place team in the Far West league, again or Valley Catholic, who placed fourth in the Cowapa League.
