By this point in the season, Brookings-Harbor High cross country was hoping to have regained enough of their form to compete at the district championships.

However, considering that the Bruins finished last in the junior varsity division — finishing behind Grants Pass and Crater — at the Hidden Valley Mustang Invitational over the weekend, the team is still far off from their goal.

As per usual, the Bruins were led by sophomore Zachary Abblitt, who took home a ninth place finish in 18:52.1 minutes. His performance was a bit down from his first place finish at the Woahink Link Invitational, where he finished with a time of 18:24.8.

Behind Abblitt in 20th was junior Andrew Enos, who finished with 20:08.45. Freshman Christian Steendahl wasn’t far off at 24th after clocking in at 20:40.19.

Daniel Strom (21:03.56), Aidan Zellmer (21:31.62), Ryan Steendahl (21:36.76) Josiah SpearDenham (21:52.82) and Everett Van Maren (22:19.09) all finished close behind one another at 28th, 30th, 31st, 33rd and 35th respectively.

Rounding out the pack was Zack Walker in 43rd place with a time of 25:27.08.

The Bruins will have seven days to recover before returning to action at the Myrtle Point Invitational on Oct. 14.

Gold Beach

The Gold Beach cross country team registered one of its strongest performances of the year on Monday as two Panthers finished first in both the mens and womens races.

While the Panthers finished second in the mens division, junior Brycen Pitchford came in first with a personal record of 13:48:32.

Pitchford was followed by his brother, Bailey, in seventh place with a time of 14:33.55, while sophomore Tandy Martin wasn’t far behind in 10th at 15:41.22.

Bringing up the rear was senior Dawson Martin (18:01.9) in 20th and sophomore Cameron Sanders (25:30.43) in 26th.

In the girls division, the Panthers had runners finishing on both ends of the spectrum.

Senior Bethy Myers (16:54.05) and freshman Anna McCann (17:00.37) finished first and second respectively, while freshman Isabelle Stender (25:36.91) and senior Avi Gaston (26:29.42) came in at 13th and 14th out of the 15-runner field.
