Concerning the letter to the editor about about purple sea urchin removal by sea otter:

First of all, the purple urchins you discuss are not gravid. There is no caloric value to them.

Second, the Ocean Protection Council has funded purple sea urchin removal at Monterey, where sea otters have existed for approximately 80 years. The otters didn't get the job done.

Human intervention has worked at Palos Verde and is being used now at Monterey.
