Rep. David Brock Smith

This year the Legislature is tasked with drawing new legislative district maps that will determine who represents you and members of your community.

What is redistricting exactly? To put it simply, it’s a constitutional obligation to rebalance political boundaries based on population changes from the U.S. Census.

Legislators on the redistricting committee will be holding virtual hearings for residents across the state to seek input on where to put our state Senate and House districts, as well as where to put Oregon’s new 6th congressional district.

If you’re wondering what’s important to consider for redistricting, a variety of criteria that other states use to ensure it’s a fair and transparent process can be found at

Axios recently reported that Oregon is at a high risk of gerrymandering, a way of drawing maps that ignores the rules in order to favor one party’s candidates. Your attendance at the public hearings can reduce this risk.

We wholeheartedly encourage everyone in our communities to bring their comments and concerns to these virtual hearings. Your input will help guide the committee’s work in creating more fair and representative maps.

There is nothing more important this year than giving our communities a say in the actions and decisions that will affect them. We look forward to hearing about our strong turnout.
