This is in reply to Steve Johnston's letter to the Pilot dated 10 - 22 - 21, in which he asks why Democrats fly the American flag.

It's because we are Americans. Mr. Johnston has insinuated with his letter that roughly half of the people living in the United States are not worthy of flying the flag. Every American should feel insulted by Mr. Johnston's letter. Just because roughly half of the people in the U.S. do not agree with him does not mean that they are any less patriotic than he is.

I served in the United States Army, military police, in Vietnam and carried an American flag on my shoulder. When I returned stateside I worked in civilian law enforcement and advertising for political campaigns for both Republicans and Democrats. There were lots of flags. I worked in fire safety for several years, and volunteered to work two disastrous floods where my efforts helped save the lives of Republicans and Democrats, alike. I did not ask anybody if they had the "Johnston okay" to be saved as they were fellow human beings to me. I am a retired Oklahoma State Police officer. Again, I wore a flag on my shoulder. For Mr. Johnston to imply that I am not worthy to carry the American flag is an insult to everything America stands for and what I and other veterans went to war for.

I carried an American flag in the last Azalea Parade. No rainbow flag, no Dixie flag, no funny flag with extra stripes or Donald Duck cartoons on them, no BLM flag, no "F**k" anybody flag, just an American flag, all by myself. The flag saw smiles, salutes, tears, other flags waving back and even applause from Americans right here in Brookings. I didn't ask anybody if they were a Republican or a Democrat; I just recognized them as fellow Americans.

I disagree with Mr. Johnston and surely he disagrees with me. Still ... I recognize Mr. Johnston's right to say whatever he wants and even to fly an American flag ... this is America.
