Hello Brookings Harbor Community. We have an opportunity to vote for a way to improve our quality of life by voting yes for Ballot Measure 8-102. By voting yes, we will establish a district called the South Coast Parks and Recreation District. The SCPRD would be an organization that assumes the responsibility for the existing facilities at Bud Cross Park, with a secondary goal of putting a bond measure on a ballot to fund the construction of an Aquatics and Recreation Center.

Voting yes would be a big step towards public access to year-round physical fitness opportunities only a facility like this provides. Our community needs to expand our ability to stay happy and socialize by providing the opportunity to swim, play pickleball, volleyball, basketball, walk or run, lift weights and engage in cardiovascular exercises to get and stay fit. We will also be able to keep our minds active and healthy with pursuits such as cards, board games, knitting etc.

The great thing is that the Aquatic and Recreation Center will be run locally by the South Coast Parks and Recreation District, but will be managed by the nationally well-established YMCA. This is an opportunity to expand our kids’ horizons to fully develop with play, for our seniors to improve their quality of life with better overall health, and really, for all ages to strive for the full potential that a healthy body and mind allow.

A vote yes would approve a bond of 33 cents per $1,000, which seems reasonable to establish much needed recreational activities for our community. This is a worthy endeavor. For more information, please visit https://southcoastparksandrec.com/. Please vote yes for a first step toward an Aquatics and Recreation Center and come join in on the fun!
