Soon after my move to Curry County, I realized that I made the correct choice, for it is truly a wonderful place to live.  And soon after that, I learned that in addition to the natural beauty, good beer and friendly people, we have in Curry County the 21st Century version of Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

An 18th century nursery rhyme, the characters of Tweedledee and Tweedledum were updated by Lewis Carroll and then by Walt Disney in 1951.

Now, updated again in Curry County, we have our own version.

Our version feels that is more important to argue over parking spaces than to provide leadership during a pandemic. In lieu of direction, we are told given the shibboleth of "personal freedom." We are also told that the county would not enforce any mandates issued by the state. Of course, the state did not ask the county to act as an enforcer. It's like not being invited to a party and telling folks that you would not go anyhow. Very Tweedledee and Tweedledumish.

Personal freedom is quite important, of course. Without it, we might have to wear seat belts when we drive or pick up after our dogs. We would not be able to beat our spouses with impunity or limit the length of our letters to the Pilot.

There have been many instances of Tweedledee and Tweedledumisms over the past years.  Space and a less than perfect memory prohibits listing them. One can only hope that the future holds many more Tweedledee and Tweedledumisms to keep us amused.

Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Agreed to have a battle;

For Tweedledum said Tweedledee

Had spoiled his nice new rattle.

Just then flew down a monstrous crow,

As black as a tar-barrel;

Which frightened both the heroes so,

They quite forgot their quarrel.
