I don't really understand what the city of Brookings City Council workshop re: St. Timothy's Church is all about, but my inclination suggests the city is trying to shut down St. Timothy’s meals and case management services to Brooking's unhoused citizens.
I was around St. Tim’s offices while people used case management services. There were people seeking jobs who needed help replacing lost or stolen drivers licenses and birth certificates needed for employment. I was aware of a young family with children that broke down and St.Tim’s put them up in a hotel until they got things sorted out. I was there many times when people used the showers and donations of clean clothes.
Some of St. Tim’s clientele will only ever be able to afford to live in a tent or a camper. This isn't just Brookings. It's everywhere. It's a lot for ONE small church to take on 'and yet, St. Tim's does it.
Please don't define all unhoused citizens by the law breakers and troublemakers. There are several in the homeless community who are quite effective at helping police the others and are probably helping some of our Brookings police officers.
Please, city leaders, create clear and concise parameters for St. Tim’s. We're heading into another fire season worse than the last and this is not the time to cut off services to unhoused individuals. Bring the key stakeholders from all sides to the table, individuals who are able to come with humility and determination to be problem solvers, people who can give and take to reach consensus and who can leave their egos outside the door. We are all members of this community. St. Tim’s has done more than their fair share to address the many and varied needs of the unhoused.
