I love America which is all the more reason I am sad to see it losing its charm. Even in the handful of years I have lived in Oregon, it too has lost some of the charm that lures people here.

Oh sure, there is no shortage of beautiful nature and scenic coastlines but I’m talking about what’s happened to the people, the feeling, the social climate. Impatience, intolerance, short temperedness and a general rudeness that has seemed to creep over everything. Neighbors at neighbor’s throat; I see too many blaming others for their restlessness, their woes, their disappointment, their seeming disillusionment with everything. More fingers pointing than hands healing. More rage, less listening.

What concerns me is the trend it’s taking. I don’t see it as going anywhere good. What alarms me is how fast it took to get here and what concerns me is how long it may take to get back to the kind of world, the kind of town we so miss. Do your part today. Drop your mask and smile at someone. Who knows, you may inspire one back. Sometimes all it takes is the first smile. Let’s all try that.
