It’s bad enough that all but one of our duly elected Coos-Curry Electric Co-op directors don’t believe in, or practice, transparency and honesty. It’s even worse that they discriminate against that person’s advocacy for us, the member/owners, and exclude participation, despite the fact that she was re-elected by us.
DON’T Be Fooled! The owner/members of the Co-op are NOT the only ones who will be paying. Increased costs will be passed on to ALL, with increased rents, etc. in the entire CCEC service area. And, who knows how these costs will be shared by the franchised Cities & South Coast lumber?
In 2020, the revised by-laws were amended to include the ability of CCEC to “PROVIDE” broadband services. That did not include/reveal that they were establishing a profit-making corporation with themselves as the corporate directors. And we, owner/members were given no vote while we are at significant financial risk i.e. left holding the bag.
The CCEC directors have recently approved a $60 million unsecured loan for Beacon Broadband with CoBank. CCEC is “guaranteeing payment.” CCEC Resolution 2022-07 (9/23/22). That’s OUR money.
Brookings City Council “Weekly Update”(9/23/22) states that, “… a Beacon subcontractor bored through an eight inch water main on Mountain View Drive, resulting in a public works crew response that lasted seven hours.” In addition it states, “We have had numerous citizen complaints during this broadband construction project.” They/WE will be billed for the cost of repairs.
The 10/7/20 “Weekly Update” documents an OSU study, “Oregon by the Numbers,” which provides information concerning Curry County. According to this study, “95.7% of the county has access to broadband.”
How does ORS 62.215 apply? Does Oregon’s Public Records Law apply? And how do we hold elected officials accountable?
