During a cold snap two years ago, the ‘warming’ shelters in Salem would not open because the temperature did not drop below 28F for two consecutive nights. I and many others couldn’t believe it. So, if you were one of the unfortunate folks walking around in wet clothing, and the shelters were filled, you had to do the best you could; sidewalk vents, building hallways or hide in Macy’s after closing. Try walking around in 35F temperatures in wet clothing. When word got out about this inhumane policy, the requirement did change, not by much, but some adjustments were made.

After reading Diana Bosetti’s article in the Pilot on Oct. 27, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. “Churches that provide benevolent meal services to the Brookings community are now required to limit those operations to two days a week and three hours or fewer per day.”  I’m sure amongst the Brookings elite, there will be families who will spend two days or more and untold hours preparing a Thanksgiving meal that will be consumed in about an hour.

Since the Brookings City Council has been incredibly uncaring for a small percent of the population, please consider this thought: Save your “to go” containers, fill them with Thanksgiving goodies and other meals throughout the year. Hand them out to those in need and hopefully the city council of Brookings will forgive you for caring.

Pastor Lindley hopefully is not alone in his desire to fight this in this unimaginable decision that has been made. If he is, words escape me.
