I disagree with the Pilot's Executive Editor David Rupkalvis. In his recent column, he twice stated that drug crimes hurt no one but the user. How can anyone not be aware that substance abuse devastates families, it leads to domestic violence and sometimes death. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers can enlighten you as to how DUI affects others.

Any police officer knows that drug use is usually funded by other crimes such as robbery and theft. The victims of these crimes are affected. Street gang violence is often caused by drug trafficking. Innocent people sometimes are caught up in the violence.

I do agree that the criminal justice system is broken and needs to be changed. More drug courts that focus on rehabilitation and education would be a start. Also, criminal defense attorneys should be required to take on a certain number of pro bono drug related cases.
