David Rupkalvis; 8-14-22 Pilot Editorial Opinion, Curry Libraries, Sexual Material Content: The Boice Library Resolution that I submitted to the Curry Board of Commissioners had absolutely nothing to do with recommending book banning or censuring.
It simply requested that we as caring adults be a little more guarded in helping to protect underaged and unsupervised children. I believed then and still of course believe now that we should simply place any controversial Sexual Material established in our Public Libraries behind the counter until parents check the books or in-formation out and if they then choose to introduce to their own children.
Frankly, I really don’t concern myself with National Library Association mandates. Also, early in my resolution, I made it clear the Curry Board of Commissioners claimed no authority, only stating a request in representing what many Curry Citizens felt was a reasonable approach and obligation to be more aware for unsuspecting or curious kids. The extreme left sadly and essentially went into orbit using horribly negative terms and spinning untruths.
Unfortunately, my resolution didn’t pass with the other two Commissioners anyway. However, to me, doing nothing on this and similar issues is not an option. I have nine grandchildren, so I will always work diligently to protect our children and families!
Steven Plaxco; 10-7-22; Pilot Letter to Editor, Boice Homeless Plan: I don’t in anyway wish to be disrespectful to Mr. Plaxco, however it is obvious he has issues. As my preliminary concept clearly identifies, all Homeless Veterans, whether residents or not along with all actual Curry Citizens, especially families suffering and experiencing homelessness are our first focus and highest priority.
I believe we all likewise clearly have that cultural responsibility. My basic approach is to transport non-residents with Substance Abuse, Mental and Behavioral Health issues to Salem where they can receive critical help. We simply do not have adequate resources here to properly assist.
If Mr. Plaxco and whoever is advising him would have simply taken the time to read the Boice Homeless plan, they could have been assured that he as a Veteran and his needs are whom we foremost wish to help. I stand by my solid six-year record in being fully engaged in Curry Veteran concerns, is-sues, and assistance. I will always work diligently for our Vets!
Jason Liddell; 10-28-22; Pilot Letter to Editor, November Ballot Measure 112: Amending our Oregon Constitution in my view should never be a simple matter. I consistently follow the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Lobby – This is a very complex issue and Citizens Initiative. The strong OSAA opposition to Measure 112 obviously carried a great deal of credibility with me.
They would not support whatsoever due to many likely negative long-term consequences, some that will be very costly to our County in particular related to our tremendous incarceration expenses. For the Curry County Taxpayers, our Jail in Gold Beach totals around $120 per inmate-day, plus their medical needs that State Law unfortunately requires our local Citizens to also bear that burden. That is sometimes staggering!
Requiring those held that are capable of working to help off-set some of those costs is hardly in my view unjust punishment. In fact, most citizens believe it’s quite reasonable. I and every person I know, of course do not support nor condone slavery in any form, period! Any claims to the contrary are simply delusional. One of my greatest heroes that I’ve ever had the privilege of studying was William Wilberforce.
He was the devoted Jesus Christ fol-lower who in the 1830’s and 40’s almost singlehandedly abolished the English-Great Britain Slave Trade. Most of the people that initiated measure 112 are decent people, Mr. Liddell though represents the ‘extreme left’.
In my view, he and others who share his views would be much more helpful within our society, fighting and speaking out against the evil Drug Cartels and Sex Traffickers if I may offer just a couple of examples. Again, I will always work diligently to protect our children and families!
