Memorial day is sacred for vets

Memorial Day is a sacred day for all war veterans. None need to be reminded of the reason why Memorial Day must be recognized.

Far too often our country as a whole takes for granted the freedoms all Americans enjoy. Those freedoms were paid for with the lives of others few of us actually knew.

The white crosses in the military cemeteries and our local cemeteries represent freedom bought and paid for. Memorial Day is for honoring those who have died serving in uniform during wartime.

As Vietnam veterans, our journey has been long, our bonds remain strong. We who remain will remember our brothers and sisters who have been called to their final home. The memory of our own will live on in us. This is what we do — it’s called remembrance; it’s called honor; it’s called family. I am sure that veterans of other wars feel the same way.

Gold Beach VFW Post 4439 will be conducting a ceremony at the Curry County Veterans Memorial at the Memorial site on Shirley Lane on Monday (May 27) at noon. There will also be a flyover and everyone is invited. If you have any questions, you can call me at 541-469-6443.

God Bless America — Home of the Brave and Land of the Free.

Sam Vitale, Vietnam veteran

Healthcare for all will bankrupt US

A recent letter to the editor said we are the only advanced nation that does not guarantee health care for all. We jail too many people. We need to cut defense and spend more on welfare. We have too many gun deaths. We need to raise taxes. We have too many rich people and not enough in the middle class.

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders wants free health care for everyone. Studies estimate free medical would increase government costs by $36.6 trillion in a 10-year period. Currently, the national government debt is $21.5 trillion. The debt-to-GDP ratio is 110 percent. This does not include $157 trillion in unfunded liabilities for Social Security and Medicare.

Socialized medicine would bankrupt the U.S. Several welfare states in Europe such as Sweden and Norway do not pay their fair share of defense costs to NATO. They rely on the U.S. to protect them from Russia and China. The U.S. invents more medical breakthroughs then the rest of the world combined. We have the most advanced health care system in the world.

Before the 2019 reduction in corporate tax rate, the combined federal and state corporate rate in the U.S. was the highest corporate rate among developed nations. It was causing jobs to go overseas. The increase in wealth of the rich and the elimination of the middle class is the result of the soft money policies of the Federal Reserve.

The Fed economists are Keynesian economists. John Maynard Keynes was a socialist.

The U.S. is ranked 20 in the world based upon deaths by firearms. Chicago has more deaths by shootings than New York and Los Angeles combined. Chicago has strict regulation of firearms.

In the early 1970s, the prison population began to rise. Currently, the prison population is four times higher than in 1975.

In 1962, Engel vs. Vitale declared prayer was unconstitutional in schools. Since that decision violent crime, drug use and teen pregnancies have skyrocketed.

In post-Christian America, many people have attempted to replace a relationship with God with opioids. Because capital punishment is no longer enforced, 15 percent of the prison population are murderers.
