John Bailey Mather

Long time Curry County resident, John Bailey Mather, left our world on Sun. Aug. 11, 2019.  

John was born in Eugene, Oregon on April 1, 1950 to Bernard I Mather and Alice Bailey Mather.  BI and Alice brought him home to Gold Beach, Oregon a few days after birth where he lived for 69 years.  John was joined by his only sibling, Johanna Mather in Dec. of 1953. He graduated from Gold Beach Union High School in 1968 and attended Southern Oregon College from 1968-1972, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in sociology.

John came home and worked as an engineer for the Curry County Road Department for 32 years and a full-time rancher for over 50 years.  He was active with the Curry County Historical Society and the Gull Players, where he met his wife of 41and ½ years, Sharon Kay Dettmer Mather.  They were married in June of 1978.

John and Sharon lived on the family ranch, the Bailey Ranch, until his death.  They raised a family of two miracle children; Christine and Taylor, along with many other adored children throughout our community.

John was preceded in death by his mother Alice Mather and father BI Mather.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter and son-in-law Christine and Austin Neil; son Taylor Mather; sister Johanna Mather; her children Joseph Travis and his wife Kris, Alicia Travis; and great-nieces Elodie and Ada Travis.
