Grant Leroy Anderson, age 87, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2020, from complications of Alzheimer’s. He was a resident of Brookings, Oregon.
Mr. Anderson was born in Watsonville, California, where he graduated from Modesto High School and attended Modesto Junior College. A veteran, Grant served in the US Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War, and following his time in the military, he enjoyed a 42 year-long career with Southern Pacific Railroad.
Upon retirement, Grant and his wife, Beryl (BJ), traveled extensively, taking many memorable trips worldwide. Together they visited South Africa and several other countries on the African continent, Tibet, China, Australia, New Zealand, and the Fujii Islands. An avid sailor and licensed captain, Grant tacked the San Juan and Gulf Islands, and kept a boat in Brookings Harbor for many years.
In addition to his passion for travel, Grant enjoyed wood-working and often could be found tinkering in his workshop. He had a deep curiosity about the world around him, spending his spare time researching and reading about anything that piqued his interest-he particularly loved stargazing and astronomy, meteorology, and holistic medicine.
Grant also loved his church community. He was a longtime member of the Calvary Assembly of God, and he was known and loved by every person there. He went out of his way to greet new faces with a big smile, an ice-breaking joke, and a tangible love and fellowship that always left a lasting impression.
Mr. Anderson is preceded in death by his son, Clifford, and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his devoted wife, Beryl (BJ); son, Greg, of Sacramento , California; brother, Will, of Modesto, California; three stepdaughters, Janet Boydof Sacramento, Stephanie Vitt of Woodstock, Georgia, and Julie Hunt of Brookings, Oregon; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her was incredibly loved and will be missed by all who knew him A memorial service will be held at a later date.
