Gary Lee Cavaness

On Friday, November 20, 2020, retired Brookings teacher Gary Cavaness passed away at his home at the age of 70.

Gary was born July 13, 1950 in Neenah, Wisconsin, to Howard Cavaness and Phyllis Pashalk. As an infant, he moved with his family to Riverton, Wyoming. He grew up camping and fishing in the Wyoming mountains.

Gary received his teaching degree from the University of Wyoming in 1973, and began his teaching career at Fort Washakie, Wyoming. He taught at Jackson School in Riverton for 15 years, where he met his wife of 42 years.

In 1990, Gary and his wife and two children moved to Brookings, Oregon, where he taught at Kalmiopsis Elementary School until his retirement in 2007.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Larry, and brother Don. He is survived by his wife Diane; his two children, Heather and Matthew; and brother Wayne.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
