Karen A.Baker, March 29, 1941 –March 31, 2019
Karen A. Baker, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 31, 2019. Karen was born in Sparta, Washington on March 29, 1941, to Scott and Lilah Jones. She grew up on a mini-farm in Ontario, Wisconsin. After graduation from Ontario High School in 1959, Karen attended Madison Technical Institute where she later graduated as an LPN in 1961. Following graduation, she went on to work as an LPN at Mendota State Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin (1961-1963), Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona (1963-1964), Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene (1964-1965), and Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach (1965-1973).
While working at Curry General, she met and married Harry Reese Baker in 1966 and in 1970 they welcomed their son, Rafe Baker. In 1973, Karen discovered her true calling as a sheriff’s deputy where she worked as a dispatcher at the Curry County Sheriff’s Office in Gold Beach from 1973-1991. She was affectionately known as “Ma Baker” by all of the deputies because she treated them like her very own.
Karen is survived by her son, Rafe (Shannon) Baker; two grandchildren, Courtney and Cody Baker; her sister, Jennifer (Rolland) Niles; her nephew, Scott (Sheila) Wallace; and grand-niece and nephew Taylor and Kyle Wallace. Karen was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
