Cecil Smith, age 81, passed away unexpectedly while recovering from surgery.
Cecil was born in Coquille, he migrated south to Brookings in his late teens.
He met and married his wife of 60 years, Bertha “Jean” Hayes while working in the lily fields.
They settled on the North Bank of the Chetco River where they raised five children, or as he called them “his jewels.”
After a long and fulfilling career with the City of Brookings, Cecil retired as Public Works Director in 1995.
After retiring he and his wife spent their leisure time traveling to every and any body of water in Oregon, in search of that exclusive monster that got away.
He is survived by his wife Bertha “Jean” Smith, and his five “jewels,” Deborah Bennett of Eagle Point; Cecil “Kim” Smith Jr. of Eagle Point; Tina Burnham of Oregon City; Chuck Smith of Brookings; and Sarah Smith of Niarada, Montana.
Happy fishing Dad. We miss you!!
A memorial is planned for 2 p.m. June 9, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Brookings.
