William C. Pettyjohn passed away Nov. 8, 2017, peacefully at home surrounded by loving family. The cause of death was renal failure.
Bill had traveled three days each week to Coos Bay for dialysis from March 2013 until November 2017. He lived in hope of a dialysis center closer to Gold Beach would become available.
Bill was born July 7, 1937 in Gold Beach to Jane L. Turner Pettyjohn — a member of the Turner and Miller families — and William H. Pettyjohn of Illinois, who had come to work in Gold Beach for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Bill graduated from Gold Beach Union High School. He then joined the U.S. Army where he served as a aircraft mechanic and airframe repairman. After his service he returned to Gold Beach and worked for a construction company hauling boulders for the jetty at the mouth of the Rogue River. He was employed in other states, but Gold Beach was home. He later owned his own business — P-John Trucking.
Bill is survived by daughter Valerie Ousley; wife Yvonne and their daughter, Scarlett; sister Marlene Underwood; brother Michael Day; as well as wonderful grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In honor of Bill’s request, no service was held.
The family is planning a celebration on his birthday this summer.
“Sweet William,” we are “glad we got to see you.”
