Dune volunteers

Tolowa Dunes Stewards Donna Thompson and Eileen Cooper in 2015.

In honor of Donna Thompson’s 83rd birthday week, the Tolowa Dunes Stewards will work to restore the Big Dune in Tolowa Dunes State Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Volunteer Sandra Jerabek said no one has given longer or more generously to the hands-on restoration of native dune habitat — and the dependent native bees, wildflowers and birds — than Thompson. She and a few others started restoration, becoming the first stewards of the dunes, 17 years ago.

“Our group has blossomed,” Jerabek said in an email. “In 2019 volunteers contributed $104,000 worth of restoration value to Tolowa Dunes State Park and the Lake Earl Wildlife Area.”

Because of the need for social distancing, only 10 volunteers may participate. To reserve a spot call or text 707-954-5253.

“Donna is still workin’ it, so come on out,” Jerabek said.
