Quake Location

This USGS graphic shows the location of the Thursday earthquake.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck at 8:02 a.m. on Thursday, Sep. 5 about 192 miles off the southern Oregon Coast near Bandon, west of Coos Bay, according to the United States Geological Service (USGS).

According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami is not expected.

Over the past year, a series of undersea quakes in this same area have been reported.

Geologists are keeping an eye on the activity, but have said the earthquakes are not signs of a major event.
