The Gold Beach High School Knowledge Bowl team earned a place at the small school nationals this year and will travel to Chicago in May to compete.
The team took second place at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) qualifying tournament in Brookings, and the NAQT invited them to the small-schools national tournament based on that performance.
Brookings-Harbor, who won the tournament, is also headed to Chicago
The school board approved our trip at its last meeting,” Advisor Corrine McGinnis said, “so we are just beginning to plan and fund raise.”
The board agreed to pay for the team’s registration, hotel, food while at the tournament, and transportation to and from the airport, aligning with past practices for athletic teams that qualified for tournaments.
McGinnis said the event and chance to travel was very exciting for the kids, but noted airfare costs $2,500 alone.
She said the team would begin fundraising immediately by sending letters to local groups that support education such as the Soroptimists, Gold Beach Youth Fund, Rotary Club. The team will meet as well to decide how individuals can contribute after costs are divided per student.
Gold Beach will send six students, and mostly students who have been involved in Knowledge Bowl multiple years, McGinnis said. They also plan to visit tourist attractions in Chicago such as the Adler Planetarium, Millennium Park, Navy Pier and the Chicago Field Museum.
McGinnis said, “This feels a bit overwhelming, but in a good way.”
Those wishing to support the group should go to the “Mrs. McGinnis Classroom Connection” GoFundMe page on Facebook.
