The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a fatal crash on U.S. 199 near milepost 24 at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
An unidentified man was pronounced deceased at the scene of the head-on collision. The Toyota he was driving crossed a double-yellow line, according to CHP, and struck a Swedish made, military-styled SUV driven by Mark Glatzfelder of Selzach, Switzerland.
Glatzfelder and his passenger were uninjured.
The deceased appears to have been from the Josephine County area, according to Del Norte Sheriff Cmdr. Bill Steven, but the sheriff’s office and Grants Pass Police Department are still trying to notify next of kin and must do so before releasing his identity.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, according to CHP officials, who are trying to determine why the unidentified man – who was northbound – crossed into the southbound lane before striking the SUV.
CalTrans, Gasquet Fire the U.S. Forest Service, CalFire and Redwood National Parks personnel assisted at the scene, according to the CHP report.
Since 2007, there have been six fatalities near milepost 24 on US 199; three of those occurred since Jan. 1.
The Del Norte Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
