Parents and staff at Kalmiopsis Elementary School recently nominated head custodian Frank Hernandez for Janitor of the Year. Now, Hernandez is a finalist in the national contest.

Sponsored by Cintas Corporation, the contest aims to recognize the best school janitors and custodians.

Hernandez is one of 10 finalists competing for a $5,000 cash prize along with $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid products and services for the school.

“When we started this contest, we were looking for a way to honor those who work so hard year-round to make schools a safe, healthy, clean place for our children to learn,” said Jillian Bauer, marketing manager with Cintas. “But what we learned was that there is so much more to a janitor’s relationship with their students and staff than we ever knew. These janitors truly are a beloved part of their school.”

Parents characterized Hernandez as an all around good guy who works hard for our kids.

Hernandez found out he was nominated by students and parents who kept telling him they had voted for him.

“I am really excited,” he said. “This is such a good thing for the school and this community. Things like this don’t happen here as often as they should.”
