The Roseburg Veterans’ Home would serve veterans’ of Southwest Oregon and across the state. It comes as good news on the heels of the firing of the director of the Roseburg VA Health Care center there, many local veterans noted.

The legislation that awarded the money was supported by State Rep. David Brock Smith R-Port Orford, the son of a Navy lieutenant commander.

“Our veterans and their families have sacrificed — some with their lives — for the freedoms we hold dear today,” he said. “This veterans’ home will continue our part to ensure broader veterans services for our region.”

Douglas County Commissioner Tim Freeman introduced the legislation when he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives.

“This legislation is as important to me now as it was when I originally moved it forward while serving in the legislature,” he said. “I applaud the efforts of my colleagues on this needed progress and for ensuring the related funding that was secured is still allocated to the project.”

Smith represents House District 1, which includes Curry, Coos, Douglas and Josephine counties.
