A California man suffered a cracked rib and minor lacerations to his head after his vehicle was struck by another driver and rolled 150 feet down an embankment on U.S. 199 on New Years Eve, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle that struck him, a 1998 Mercedes, was driven by 63-year-old Richard Rasmussen of Brookings. He suffered no injuries in the incident, according to reports.
According to a California Highway Patrol collision report, both vehicles were heading south, about eight miles east of U.S. 101, when Rasmussen hit the 1997 Ford SUV being driven by 64-year-old Gregory Hawran, of Trabuco Canyon, California.
The Mercedes hit the SUV on its right side, pushing it off the road and down the embankment. The car struck numerous rocks and trees as it rolled down the hill, the report said.
The Gasquet Fire Department and Del Norte County Search and Rescue retrieved Hawran from his car and took him to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment.
Both parties were wearing seatbelts, according to reports.
The collision is under investigation.
