The South Curry Health Care Alliance will discuss the possibility of obtaining a satellite hospital in the Brookings area.
The discussion is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Harbor Water District meeting room, 98069 W. Benham Lane.
Curry Health Network obtained an administrative rule change that allows it to open an ancillary emergency department in its now-called Same-Day Care clinic on Fifth Street, but hasn’t been able to raise the $1 million or so needed to open it.
The only hospital in Curry County is Curry General Hospital, a new, $30 million facility that opened this spring in Gold Beach.
But the majority of Curry County’s population lives south of Gold Beach, prompting proponents of a hospital here to consider its options. State law says rural hospitals cannot be within 35 miles of one another. The only other nearby hospital is Sutter Coast, in Crescent City, also 25 miles from Brookings.
Proponents say there are ways to get around having three hospitals within 50 miles of one another, including the possibility of obtaining one in a special district such as the port.
