Two Brookings men have perished in a traffic crash on U.S. Highway 199.
Authorities said the vehicle's driver was 67-year-old Roland Robertson and the passenger was 44-year-old Travis Lea, both residents of Brookings. Both suffered fatal injuries from the crash.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) found the two dead in a small Mazda pickup truck that left the highway. Investigators said the truck apparently went down an embankment between Gasquet and Idlewild at 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15.
CHP dispatch received a call alerting them to the crash. CHP, Gasquet Fire Department, Del Norte Search and Rescue, CalTrans - Idlewild and the Del Norte Ambulance reported to the scene on mile marker 24 to find two males with fatal injuries.
After a preliminary investigation, it appears the truck was traveling north on 199 and ran off the road crashing into a tree, according the CHP.
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but there was no foul play involved, according the Brandy Gonzalez, CHP public information officer. Authorities have not determined if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
The investigation is still ongoing.
