As the weather warms up, camping enthusiasts can go outdoors and enjoy one of the county’s two campgrounds. Boice Cope County Park, north of Port Orford, a campground with a day-use area, will be ready for overnight reservations on Friday, May 8. Lobster Creek, near Agness, will remain closed until further notice.

Governor Kate Brown announced Tuesday local campgrounds could re-open as long as they were taking precautions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The county has updated its website, hung posters at the park, and will be distributing information to guests on ways to help meet the governor’s goals of reducing the spread of the disease. Also, a hand sanitizing station will be added and extra cleaning measures are being implemented.

“This is great news to those who enjoy our beautiful county. I’m optimistic people will be responsible and adhere to the precautions we’re implementing in the campground,” said Chet Brewer, the county’s Facilities Maintenance Director.

The campground won’t be able to accommodate as many visitors as they typically do, however, in that campers can only lease every other campsite to encourage social distancing and ensure picnic tables are virus free. Memorial Day weekend more spaces will be available and spacing requirements lifted.

The county employs a camp host at the park who will keep an eye on the campground and ensure people are complying with the governor’s guidelines. Campground reservations can be made online on the county’s website.

Private campgrounds in the county are also eligible to re-open. They should contact Summer Matteson, Curry County’s Economic Development Coordinator, for sector guidelines and recommended best management practices. Matteson can be reached at mattesons@co.curry.or.us or 541-373-9027.
