The following information is from the City of Brookings Weekly Update May 19 provided by Brookings City Police Chief Kelby McCrae, Brookings Fire & Rescue, and the Brookings City Manager’s office.
Police Division
Brookings Police officers handled 409 calls for service, conducted 50 traffic stops, and issued 6 traffic citations. 14 of the traffic stops were for exceeding the posted limit or an unsafe driving violation on downtown Chetco Avenue. Dispatch received 584 total calls: 169 were calls to 9-1-1, 40 were misuses of 9-1-1, and 10 were false alarms. There were 2 medical transports from Pelican Bay State Prison this week into Brookings proper.
All officers conducted another active threat training using our in-house trainers. This was a continuation of the DPSST training that we did in April and further enhances our ability to quickly address a threat, secure the area, and provide aid to those injured.
Officer Lucero attended the 3-day Assisting Individuals in Crisis and Group Crisis in Central Point sponsored by CIS. She was trained in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and will be equipped to conduct Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) as well as provide counseling to staff and partner agencies following a traumatic incident.
We are recruiting for an open 9-1-1 Dispatcher position to join our team. Information can be found on the department's Facebook page and the City's website.
Fire Division
Firefighters responded to 15 calls for service: 8 were for medical aid, 4 were fire-related, and 3 were for public assistance. No water was used from city fire hydrants. Currently, we have 22 active firefighters and two active CERT members.
Training this week was focused on rescue airbags for lifting heavy objects like vehicles along with proficiency in operating a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
The Fire Department is actively seeking volunteers to join our essential community team. Information and the application can be found on the city's website and the department's Facebook page.
