During the Gold Beach City Council meeting on Monday evening, Gold Beach Fire Department (GBFD) Chief Tyson Krieger was on his way to Portland in the department’s new rescue vehicle to attend the Northwest Fire and Rescue Expo.

The rescue rig cost about $197,000, was ordered about a year and a half ago and was delivered about three weeks ago.

According to staff reports, the fire department has three bulky Type 1 Engines which are used in rare cases, a new Rescue vehicle, and a Tender Engine.

Krieger had requested the addition of the new Type 3 Engine as well as a Type 6 Engine, which is adapted to quickly reach fires in remote locations where the use of other types of fire trucks would be nearly impossible.

The council also voted to authorize the purchase of a Type 3 Engine, which is expected to arrive roughly a year after the order is made and cost about $325,000.

In other developments:

While no final actions were taken on the issue, the council voted to consider applications for digital display signs such as those on the Rogue Federal Credit Union property on a case-by-case basis. To be considered, signs must meet certain baseline requirements such as being equipped with an ambient light sensor to adjust intensity based on current light conditions. Additionally, it was proposed the display not change images more than once every 10 seconds and that signs must be turned off between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.. This issue will be on the agenda for the next meeting in June.

Council voted to allow Wild Oaks Food, a barbecue restaurant in Gold Beach, to apply for an on premise beer and wine sales liquor license.

Two properties along Mateer Road declared dangerous buildings in a February 2019 meeting were discussed. Owners of property at 28515 Mateer Road will be instructed to remove a still-standing chimney within 30 days, declaring it a dangerous nuisance. Owners of property at 28312 Mateer Road were ordered in February to remove brush immediately adjacent to the structure and remove brush around the property to reduce fire risk. While the brush was removed, the council voted to instruct the owner to obtain a demolition permit for the structure within 30 days and obtain a replacement housing permit within six months.

Mayor Karl Popoff decided to amend the agenda and table Gold Beach’s proposed plastic bag ban, noting the recent approval of House Bill 2509 in the state House of Representatives. If the bill is approved by the legislative process it “Prohibits use of single-use checkout bags except in certain cases. Allows Department of Environmental Quality to impose (a) civil penalty of not more than $250 per day. Repeals statute requiring retail establishments that offer plastic bags to customers to also offer paper bags.”
