Calvin Harding of Brookings was assaulted in Bud Cross Park Tuesday and struck in the face so severely that he was transported to Curry General Hospital with head wounds. According to Brookings Police reports, Harding, 20, was in the park with four juveniles when at least one of them attacked him.

Brookings Police Sgt. Donny Dotson said Harding was later transported to Portland for surgery on a “significant but not life-threatening injury.”

Harding, who was attacked at about 2:45 p.m., was visiting with two juveniles he knew and two he did not, according to Dotson. It is not clear at this time which of them struck Harding or why, although at least one of those who allegedly struck Harding was known to him.

The juveniles — all males — names have not been disclosed, although three of the four have been identified, and they range in age from 16 to 17 years old, according to police.

The Brookings Police report the investigation is ongoing and request anyone with information about the incident call 541-469-3118. Persons wishing to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers at 541-412-0989.
