DNA testing performed at the University of North Texas has confirmed remains found on the Pacific shore near China Beach north of Brookings to be those of Christopher Michael Kareck, 21 of Sparks Nevada, according to Oregon State Police (OSP).

Kareck was swept into the ocean near Indian Sands Jan. 3, 2018 and his remains were found Jan. 31, 2018 on the shore about 1.5 miles north of that site.

OSP reports state the remains were collected by OSP personnel and submitted to the University of North Texas for DNA testing. Gold Beach Area Command troopers had collected a toothbrush from Kareck’s belongings at the time, and it was submitted as a DNA standard for comparison against the remains.

The University of North Texas issued a report March 25 confirming the remains found on Jan. 31, 2018 were Kareck.

Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Proulx said Kareck and a friend were sightseeing alone on a cliff edge over the water when a wave carried Kareck into the ocean. The two men had traveled together from Nevada.
