A Brookings-area man was killed Thursday night when he lost control of his ATV in the dark, rolled down a 50-foot embankment and struck a tree about 4 miles up Winchuck River Road, according to sheriff's officials.

William Lampley, 38, of Winchuck River, was found dead at the scene after the vehicle struck a tree, said Curry County Sheriff John Ward.

His nephew, Christian Cerros, 20, of Fort Dick, California, was a passenger in the ATV and transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City with facial and head injuries. He was able to crawl back up the embankment in search of help.

Neither were wearing helmets, and ATVs typically do not come equipped with seat belts, Ward said.

The Curry County Search and Rescue team was summoned to the scene at 7:45 p.m., and wrapped up operations at about 11:40 p.m.
