Curry County Voices advisory council will host a town hall April 20 to facilitate public discussion on three county tax matters to appear on the May 21 ballot.
The town hall will begin at 1 p.m. in the Harald Haug Learning Center at the Curry Public Library in Gold Beach.
The Curry County Board of Commissioners plan to place a measure on the ballot that, if approved, would impose a transient lodging tax on short-term rentals in unincorporated areas of the county. The tax would affect visitors to the area who stay in hotels, inns and other lodging facilities.
Seventy percent of the revenue generated from the tax would, by state law, be dedicated to tourism promotion; the remainder would be divided between law enforcement and the Curry County Fairgrounds.
Commissioners also voted to place two advisory questions on the ballot to determine how Curry County residents feel about proposed taxes prior to any ballot measure asking to implement them.
The first is a non-binding vote concerning a tax on marijuana growers; the other concerns imposing a consumption tax on certain restaurant and prepared food sales county-wide.
The event will feature a moderator to address each issue separately, and proponents and opponents will each be given the opportunity to voice their views and take questions. An open discussion will follow.
The Town Hall will be live streamed by Curry County Voices on Charter cable channel 182, as well as videotaped and cablecast on Channel 182 starting April 26 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening until the votes are counted. It will also be available for viewing on demand on the currycountyvoices.com website.
