Curry County Sheriff John Ward reported Monday a scam in which someone claiming to be “Sgt. Chris Bishop” and telling people there are warrants out for their arrest or that they have missed jury duty and owe a fine.

For those whose phones have caller ID, the call appears to originate from the sheriff’s office but is not, Ward said. Additionally, the scammer provides a number to return the call that, when called reaches a recording suggesting you’ve reached Ward’s office.

Anyone receiving such a call is advised not to send money or provide any information and to alert the sheriff’s office at 541.247.3243.

“Please understand that the sheriff’s office, or any law enforcement, will never call and tell you that you have an active warrant or have someone pay a fine that way,” Ward said.
