Clean water bill

Brookings has rescinded its boil-water order at Salmon Run golf course after replacing the UV disinfection equipment for its water system.

General guidelines on ways to reduce the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Earthquake Friday

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 3 p.m. Friday 92 miles west of Brookings and 10 miles deep in the center of the Gorda Plate.

No tsunami warning was issued, and no damage was reported on land.

The temblor was registered in the Cascadia Fault, an area where the oceanic plates are slowing heading east and under the continental plates. The last time the plates dramatically lurched was almost 319 years to the day, and caused giant tsunamis told in local Native American verbal lore and in Japanese written records.

Scientists say if a 9.0 earthquake hits the area, coastal Curry County will be inundated with a wall of water 115 feet in height, isolating residents for weeks until help arrives.

DeFazio on committee

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio was elected chairman of House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, his office announced Friday.

“Every state and territory in our country is profoundly affected by the decisions made in this committee,” he said in a press release. “Our communities and businesses depend on our network of roads, bridges, airports, rail, ports and public transit to move people and goods safely, whether it is across town, across the country, or internationally. And millions of American jobs are directly tied to the health of our infrastructure.”

He said the United States is “approaching a transportation crisis,” and hopes to lead the caucus to address it.

“I will be a tireless advocate for the kind of infrastructure investment that results in job creation, increased economic growth and decreased emissions,” he said. “I will fight for common sense, comprehensive solutions to address the major issues facing our aging, 20th century infrastructure and champion a smarter, greener infrastructure that helps to reduce carbon pollution, and is more resilient and better equipped to handle the impacts of climate change.”

He also hopes to gain bipartisan support in his efforts.

“I will balance this with our duty to provide reasonable and responsible oversight of the Trump Administration’s implementation of laws under the Committee’s jurisdiction,” he said. “Together, we can lay the groundwork for infrastructure investment that delivers for generations to come.”

Rescuing cats, dogs

The South Coast Humane Society in Brookings took in 511 cats and dogs in 2018, including 164 from shelters in the West known for their high kill rates.

Then the volunteers at the shelter turned around and adopted out 438 of those pets to new homes.
