Francis Scott Johnson, 22, of Grants Pass has been identified as the man killed in a head-on collision on U.S. 199 near milepost 24, according to Del Norte Sheriff Cmdr. Bill Steven.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the crash at 2:30 p.m. Monday and said the Toyota Johnson was driving crossed a double-yellow line and struck a Swedish made, military-styled SUV driven by Mark Glatzfelder of Selzach, Switzerland.

Glatzfelder and his passenger were uninjured.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, according to CHP officials, who are trying to determine why Johnson — who was northbound — crossed into the southbound lane before striking the SUV.

Since 2007, there have been six fatalities near milepost 24 on US 199; three of those occurred since Jan. 1.
