Eight-year-old Claire Pieper of Brookings was recognized by the Brookings City Council Monday night for “bringing honor to herself, her family, dance company and community” after she won first place in the children’s category Talent Search competition at the Oregon State Fair in August.

Her father, Mayor Jake Pieper, choked up while reading the resolution, which noted that Claire has only been dancing for three years, yet won the county fair competition in July with her self-choreographed performance in which she danced to “This is Me” in Gold Beach, and was then asked to compete in Salem.

Claire has aspirations of being a professional ballerina and a bakery owner, Jake said.

“I’m proud of you, sweetheart,” he said. “To see you grown up is very special.”

“You brought great pride to Brookings,” added City Councilor Dennis Triglia. “You’re only 8 years old and you put Brookings on the map at that state fair.”
