The Del Norte Triplicate and Curry Coastal Pilot is proud to introduce Matt Dierlam as its new Advertising Director.
Originally from Northern California, Dierlam has family roots in the Bay area and Sacramento Valley and has worked for over 25 years with newspapers and magazines in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and most recently in northern Nevada. Dierlam assumed his new position at the two Western Communications papers on July 2.

Dierlam began his career as a communications specialist with the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Humphrey, Korea, and at Fort Hood in Texas. Following his military service, while visiting his father in Alaska, he fell in love with the area and decided to move his family there in 1987.
He wrote to the Anchorage Times’ publisher at the time, Bob Atwood, and asked for advice on moving his family to Alaska. “I wouldn’t advise anyone moving to Alaska based on the whims and fancies of potential subscribers,” Atwood wrote back.
Despite Atwood’s warning, Dierlam knew that he wanted to experience the beauty of the Last Frontier and took the risk of relocating his family. “He basically told me not to come to Alaska, but I did. … My family and I were very happy and successful. My media sales career really took off in Alaska,” Dierlam said. “I raised my three boys there.”
While living in Anchorage, Dierlam worked for a variety of community newspapers and business publications and even helped launch a few new ones. He worked mainly in advertising, circulation and marketing related positions and greatly enjoys the excitement of the publishing business. He also worked as a team-leader with the Alaska Military Youth Academy, a National Guard at-risk youth program that helps reclaim the lives of challenged kids.
“It was an extremely strict and disciplined environment all about physical fitness and education, and one of the most rewarding opportunities in my life.”
Kim Fowler, publisher of the Triplicate and the Pilot, noted that Dierlam’s strength is working with small- to medium-sized local businesses to help them achieve their goals.
“I am excited to welcome Matt as advertising director,” she said. “His experience will be a valuable asset to our newspapers as well as the local business community.”
Dierlam is the father of three boys: Matthew, Michael and Marcus. Two of his sons followed in their father’s footsteps and served in the armed forces. Matthew, his oldest son, is a Navy Chief, and his youngest just served nine years in the Air Force. His second son is a CPA in Phoenix.
The opportunity to return to Northern California and southern Oregon and continue working with community newspapers helped him decide on the Wild Rivers Coast as his new home destination. Dierlam said he is excited to begin exploring the area and have the opportunity to work with the local business community.
“I enjoy meeting new people, brainstorming marketing ideas, and developing business relationships,” he said. “I still believe in the power and value of community newspapers. As long as people care about friends and family, why their taxes went up, or who scored the winning goal at a high school sporting event — local newspapers will survive. The enduring strength of newspapers remains our credibility and commitment to covering local news and events. Newspapers are still a key component of a vibrant community.”
