Brookings and Gold Beach police found the man they believe was the driver of a truck in a hit and run incident that seriously injured a man crossing Chetco Avenue in Brookings Monday morning.

Dustin Davidson, most recently of Gold Beach, was cited with felony charges of failing to perform the duties of a driver. Additional charges are pending, said Donny Dotson of Brooking Police Department. Law enforcement arrested Davidson shortly after sending out an alert via social media.

Witnesses said the man was crossing Chetco Avenue near Blue Coast Inn when he was hit by a northbound burnt orange Toyota Tundra pickup. He suffered severe injuries to his legs and head, Dotson said.

Witnesses described the pickup as being a 2014 to 2017 model with an extended cab and a matching canopy over the bed of the truck and a rack on top of that.

Davidson was found at a house in Gold Beach, and there were indications on his vehicle that the canopy and rack had been removed, Dotson said. Investigators are still looking for those items. There was also evidence on the truck that it had recently struck something on the driver’s side.

The victim was transported by Cal-Ore ambulance to the Brookings Airport and flown to a hospital out of the area.

Police officials did not have the name of the man, the extent of his injuries nor which hospital he was taken to.

It is the second wreck involving a pedestrian on Chetco Avenue in a week, and the fifth wreck in the area since the summer tourism season began. The first pedestrian-related incident involved a man who lost control of his bicycle on Hillside Avenue and hit an RV driving northbound on Chetco Avenue June 1.

Anyone who witnessed the hit and run or has information regarding this whereabouts of Davidson’s canopy and rack is asked to call Curry County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-974-0000 or 541-412-0989, or the Brookings Police Department at 541-469-3118. Callers may remain anonymous.
